Raul Jorolan
When I was a very young kid, I picked up a pencil and drew a line from point to point without lifting it from the paper. These seminal, childlike strokes formed my very first created image, a five-pointed star. It was a defining moment in my formative years that brought in a surge of intense fascination in the visual arts. There was no stopping!
I am a visual tinkerer, I imagine, I draw on paper and I draw on air (wherever and whenever my muse prompts me), I laugh, I make stories, I make visual recordings. I shoot and…
I paint. I like doing figurative art. Anything that snares my attention and spurs me to paint it- people, pop culture, human anatomy and the admiration of the woman’s figure, comic books, cars and things, everyday magic moments, retro stuff, figments of my imagination, boyhood fascinations, strange juxtapositions, relationships, travel images, visual metaphors, touches of whimsy, mind wanderings, curiosities and twists. It comes through with a simple caveat- it is mostly everything that is happy. It must elicit a smile. It is a feel-good moment.
And I love the color. I dabble in color. Painting mostly in oil with occasional sorties in acrylic and pastels, it seems that I could not just let go of what the world has to offer – a rich, resplendent spectrum called life (including black & white) and basking in it, what a canvas!
I am anti-angst.
Being an urban dweller for most of my adult existence, my roots and influences take me back to my boyhood country bumpkin years where life was lived simply, laughter filled the days, bucolic meanderings and frolics in the wide open space and beaches and a relaxing pace in quaint provincial city life. All these left a strong and indelible imprint in my psyche. They cannot be erased. These were the “unplugged” years, shorn of high technology where it whetted the appetite for good reading and developed the art of engrossing storytelling.
Fusion. All that and the present big city urban experience fused well for art to thrive and my artist’s character to become nimble, explorative and ratcheted up my sensors. I have shuttled and treaded the visual landscape with great delight – drawing, filming, painting, and incessant, insatiable imagining.
Yes, I imagine the world. I paint it.
